I find myself tripping over the definitions of these words, are they synonymous? Jane Doe received ophthalmic care (or ophthalmological care) at James Brown Hospital?

I had the same exact issue. I'm pretty sure they can be used interchangeably, but I went with ophthalmological because it seemed to flow better. M-W has them both listed as adjectives: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ophthalmology
Good to know, i've definitely been using them interchangeably with a preference for ophthalmic (shorter/easier to say)!
