Does anybody have any idea how competitive ophthalmology away rotations are to obtain? Schools always let their own medical students have first pick of rotations but ophthalmology is a relatively esoteric field.

I'm interested in doing an away rotation at MEEI first block of my 4th year.

Depends on the month (June and July are busy) and the number of home students they have rotating (yes, most programs give their students first pick). I would contact the programs you are interested ASAP, as the outside spots fill quickly at the big-name programs. If the clinical rotations fill, you can always try doing a research rotation in a specific lab. You may have to contact the individual attendings for that. Try to have 3-4 programs on your list of aways (if you are truly interested in them) and inquire about all of them, in case your first choice does not work out.

Has anybody here done an away rotation at MEEI in June or July? How are away slots typically assigned? First come first serve? Letter of recommendation? Board scores? Networking?
