Ophtho Compensation Report

Interesting to look at ... but no where in the report does it actually say the number of ophthalmologists included in the survey ... only the total number of physicians that completed surveys across all 22 specialties. ... So I wonder how reliable this is?

Didn't look at it again, but I thought it broke down who and how many responded pretty well. Ophthalmologists responded in good numbers from what I recall. You should really be questioning if there are really that many ophthalmologists making less than 100 grand.

Actually if you look at the overall report, it states that 2% of respondents were ophthalmologists. 2% of 15794 = 315.88 ophthalmologists 🙂

Is that enough to take these results seriously? I have no idea.

yeah me neither...

doesnt tell you how many were specialists.

When i finished my cornea/refractive fellowship in '97, job offers I saw were $100-150k a year. i look at the aao.org job listings now, almost 15 yrs later, and they are certainly no better. This is really disheartening, esp. since inflation (gasoline was maybe $1/gallon and now is $4) means offers now are really less than then. Plus, ophth has not (unlike other specialties) continued to limit the number of trainees, so there is definitely an oversupply of ophths, esp in larger cities. Even though we really love being an eye doc, it's generally a noticeably "worse" specialty to pursue over the past 2 decades

It seems like most offers now are 150-200 for anything not retina or plastics. That seems like a reasonable starting salary based on lifestyle. Pediatricians seem to start around 100, and vanilla internal at less than 150. General surgery starting salaries seem comparable to Ophtho, and the work hours are not. For comparable work hours, I can only think of Derm as offering better compensation. Ortho, NSG, ENT, Cards, OBGYN etc. all require a lot more hours/stress/call. Radiologists work longer hours than ophthalmologists, make a ton more money, but they will see their reimbursements cut in the near future. Anesthesia is shockingly still a great field in terms of compensation and lifestyle. Salaries are going up in all regions while CRNA salaries are starting to trend down. Average salaries in the South are closing in on 500k, but you wont start at that, and if you want to live in a place like San Diego/ San Fran prepare to start at 100k if you can find a job.

if you think "avg salaries in the south are about 500", then I must be the "bogeyman" because that is not even in the same universe, and I am in the south...wish i were wrong...sorry

Anesthesia, not ophthalmology. Family member is an anesthesiologist. Just finished renegotiating their contract with the hospital.

Do you really think anesthesiologists will be making $500k in 10 years after ObamaCare is enacted (and that's not even taking into account CRNA's...)?? Because those on the anesthesiology forum definitely don't seem to think so...

Absolutely not, they make way to much right now when compared to other fields. Most outliers get squashed eventually. Their salaries are not supported by what they bill, hospitals subsidize them to keep the ORs running. If I am wrong someone correct me.
