Hi guys,

Is it ok to send in an LOR from a community opthalmologist if it is an excellent one, in place of an average (not bad but not amazing either) from an academic doc?

Can we even send in private practice ophtho letters?

Thanks a lot.

It depends, I thought you were allowed 3 ophtho LORs. As to private practice, perhaps. There are a few who might be worth it, especially if they still publish or are rockstars.

Plenty of community docs have academic ties. At my residency, we would work with some private practice guys who were really dedicated to teaching, publishing, and strong advocates for us residents. Many were also well connected and had strong ties to other institutions as well.

A letter from such a doc that is strong would help you out much more than a weak letter from an "academic" doc.
