If you are interested in this route you may want to look into the program at MEEI and the Eyestar program at Jules-Stein (UCLA). As an MD/PhD, I think you should think very carefully about what doing a full PhD will do for you versus intensive research fellowship training. Certainly, there are some very successful researchers (think Pflugfelder here in Houston) who are not PhD trained.

I'm currently doing a research year, and, while I love research, I do not want to put off my medical training any longer. I do have an interest in academic medicine (although, this may change in 2 years), and I was wondering what would be most beneficial to me (i.e. land a spot at a place where I could earn post-medical training + PhD training OR try my hand at landing a post-doc position with the NIH [or another program] after I receive my post-medical training).
