Im reading ob gyn kaplan book and its boring me to death in addition to being horribly written in my opinion. What do you guys think about kaplan books for step 2?

Before I begin, I will say that I am scheduled to take Step 2-CK in August, thus have not experienced the exam yet. That said, I think the Kaplan books are too long! Unless you have a lot of dedicated free time, reading them is very tedious and it would be hard to maintain focus for such a long time! Especially since a good amount of most peoples' studying focuses on questions so, even after all this reading, you'd have to spend a lot of time on questions. I feel like, when I read the Kaplan books, I'm kind of skimming the body of the text to focus on the few key words/phrases/sentences. The books just seem extremely low-yield, in the sense that they would take an insane amount of time to master. Mastering them would take time away from questions, other sources of information, etc. The general consenses seems to be that one should focus on a concise review book (i.e. Secrets/Crush or First Aid), read that many times and do a lot of questions, while reviewing the explanations in detail. I can think of more people recommending Secrets/Crush than First Aid, but there are people in both categories. I would not recommend continuing with Kaplan. Good luck!

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. I took a year off between 3rd and 4th year and am now prepping for Step 2. So I have been a little out of the loop, is there anyone that has been in this position and preparing for Step 2? Do you think Kaplan books and videos would be beneficial, or should I stick to 1 review book and questions (usmleworld)? I have about 7 weeks to study for this thing and want to do reasonably well. I did pretty well 3rd year, so hopefully that will help. Thanks for the advice.

Jay, I did not specifically take 1 year off between M-3 and M-4 year. However, my
M-3 year took much longer than one year, due to various unforseen circumstances. Plus, I'm taking Step 2 after having already completed most of M-4 year. Thus, there has been quite a time lapse in between, so I maybe able to shed some light on your situation as well. As I mentioned to anconeous, I don't think the Kaplan books are worth the time. Reviewing the videos would cost a lot more time (and money) than the books alone! I used Kaplan for MCAT and it was a real pain in the a** to go to the center, write on the plastic covering of the tests and take notes on the side. I thought I wasted a lot of time doing that. I think it would be equally inefficient to do the same thing with the books and videos, even if it does not require trips to the Kaplan center. I'm not sure what you mean by "reaonably well," but if you check out some of the threads which I have referenced below, you'll see that people have done well with using one basic review book in conjunction with USMLEworld. With regards to which basic review book is better, some people go with Crush/Secrets while others recommend First Aid. It seems that the Crush/Secrets method is more popular on this forum than FA, but there's no clear winner. I'm reading Secrets for some topics and FA for others. I would highly recommend the Review book/USMLEworld method much more than Kaplan. Good luck!
