I'm finishing residency this summer and I have been interviewing for outpatient pediatrics jobs in a major Northeast city. I have a few offers and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on which one to take and fair salaries.

Job 1: Pays $185k, very intense with hospital neonatal rounds before clinic a couple times a week and regular weekend coverage. I'm not a big fan of the hospital FYI.

Job 2: Pays $175k, mostly outpatient at a quasi-private practice. Friendly environment but it is production oriented so tough to work here part time when I have a family. I would also be practicing fairly independently with not as much support.

Job 3: Pays $145k which is the lowest of any offer I've gotten and negotiated, but it is at a very prestigious hospital and is a very nice gig, 9-5 clinic with some protected teaching time, 6 weeks vacation, and lots of part-timers so this is definitely the best lifestyle gig and I really loved the practice.

I'm planning on going forward with Job 3, but I really wanted to hear your thoughts and also ask what a fair salary for a starting pediatrician might be? Medscape's reports are around 200k, but that includes specialists and non-entry level pediatricians. Additionally, factoring in the lifestyle and part-time opportunities at Job 3, I'm leaning towards $145k not being too bad. Would you agree? Thanks for your help.

Pick whichever seems like the best fit for you and your family. That 40K before tax difference isn’t worth grief. Also, sometimes university attached hospitals have nice fringes, college tuition reimbursement and nice match rates for 403s. Alternative, private hospitals make give stock options...

Agree with this. People forget to take benefits into account during negotiations. Lower salaries are sometimes balanced by great 401k or tuition benefits. Make sure you look at the whole package.

That said, the best job is the one that puts you in the best environment. Are the people supportive? Can you bounce ideas off of them when you need to? Are they willing to cover you if something big comes up?
