Opinions on Shirt/Tie with Navy Suit?

I have a medical school interview coming up and I decided to go with a dark navy suit. However, I am having a hard time coordinating colors with the suit. I was thinking of:

Option 1: White shirt, dark blue tie, black shoes/black belt

Option 2: Very very very light blue shirt, burgundy/maroon tie/very very dark brown shoes/belt

Go with the white shirt and blue tie. If you don't have brown shoes/ belt, then your blacks ones are fine.

My only problem is mine is a very dark navy and I tried on some black shoes and the only problem between a dark midnight blue navy, black shoes, and a black belt with a dark blue tie is that there are too many dark contrasting colors. My hair is jet black, too. It's not easy on the eyes 🙁


It's like wearing a dark red with brown.

Don't wear navy with black. In concept they work, but in practice it kind of looks tacky. It's better to complement the navy with a brown shoe, it's just more natural for some reason (probably has something to do with color theory).

Honestly, both shirt and tie combos are classic and professional, you won't go wrong with either. Personally I like how maroon/burgundy looks so I would go with that, but either choice would be fine for an interview. In fact white shirt/burgundy tie might look killer too.

My staple has been navy suit, TAN shoes and belt, really accentuates the outfit, livens up your look with some brightness.

White shirt with whatever tie you think looks nice. solids, blue, red, etc. Be bold but not stupid 🙂

What about dark blue shirt, cordovan shoes/belt, and a red tie? If the red is too bright I might have to just go buy a bergundy tie because that would look fly.
