Hi,
I am currently a junior and was wondering if you guys could give me some opinions or advice.

URM: Hispanic

Current Overall GPA: 2.98
Science GPA: 2.53

Science Courses Taken.
Chem 1( First time=C, Second Time= B)
Chem 2 (B-)
Ochem 1 (C- first time, currently retaking it)
Bio 1 (C- first time, had to retake because it didn't transfer so second time was a B-)
Calculus (c-)
Still Need to take ochem 2, and both physics.
Will also take microbiology, genetics, biochemistry

ECs
Work Experience

Over 2000 hours of CNA work at hospitals, still increasing hours

Volunteer:
RA in one of biggest studies which is a nation wide study: Currently volunteer 5 hrs a week
Hospital Volunteer: 50 Hrs
Going to volunteer in food pantry this year

Shadow:
5 Hrs with Geriatric Specialist
Will still continue to shadow more.

I am doing an extra year, due to transferring freshmen year and my major.

My freshmen year was the worst with a 2.75, 2.5. My mom passed away that year and ever since it has been hard to deal with her passing.

I have estimated that if I receive a 4.0 in every class from now on, and that is a BIG IF. I would then be at a 3.45 undergraduate GPA, I don't know about my science GPA.

I know I will still most likely have to try and go to a post-bac program if I would like to continue with med school. So any opinions that you guys have, I would really appreciate it, my overall goal is med school, that is the big dream.

To add to that, since I am taking that extra year, I do have the opportunity to take more classes or retake the courses I did bad in, so should I try and take higher level classes, or what should I do. Thank you

You need to take enough science courses to increase your sGPA to 3.0. Then you would need a MCAT over 500 to have a chance for interviews at some of the newer DO schools.

GPA is a problem, many schools (MD and DO) will not even look at your application if your GPA does not rise to at least a 3.2. You've retaken many classes already and will need to explain your rationale if interviewed. I'd recommend a graduate program of some sort after graduation if you don't raise your GPA by a highly significant amount.

You will need a competitive MCAT to compensate for GPA, I'd say 515+ for MD programs and 505+ for DO programs. Take like, 12 full length practice tests trying to raise your score.

Work to get your gpa up before graduating and just like the person above said, think about a graduate program. You should take the mcat and do as best as you can to get at the minimum a 508, a 515+ would increase your chances much more though. Best advice for you is to graduate and increase your gpa, and then spend at the very very minimum 3 months studying for mcat after graduating and doing only mcat so that you can get the highest possible score. And while doing that you need to increase your volunteering (clinical and non-clinical) shadowing etc. as your studying for mcat.

From now on when you retake a course, you really need to get As. Schools won’t be impressed with a B or a B-in a retake. You actually need to get all
As from now on. Your ECs are weak and you have so much to do to be competitive. But if you want to be a doctor that’s what you’ll have to do.
And as @Goro says, “always have a Plan B”.

Ace everything from now on.

What Hispanic group do you represent? Not all Hispanics are URM? Language skills are always good, and evidence of commitment to Hispanic communities are always looked highly upon.
