So I'm entering med school in the fall at Univ. of Maryland and am extremely excited except for one thing. My first great love is travel-if I couldn't do medicine, I would continue to just go all over the world. My only concern with Maryland is that they don't have many opps. to study/volunteer abroad during the next 4 years (unless I'm wrong in my research.) What other programs have others out there used that allow them to work abroad during their vacations and summers? This is one part of my life that I do not ever want to give up, even with the lack of time during med school. Thanks!

At our university we constantly get e-mails from various departments regarding opportunities abroad including S America, Africa and Asia. Also a big university like U of MD has many faculty members (in house and rotating) who do a lot of work abroad. So I would suggest:
Keep an eye on the e-mails
Make connections with the administrative assistants, you will be surprised as to how many important people they can introduce you to.

A friend at my school went to Spain with an undergrad summer study abroad program between ms1 and ms2. It was non-medical, of course, but it was a nice, inexpensive way for her to spend the summer in europe. Another thing you can look into is 4th year electives abroad. There is a recent thread on SDN about this with a link (I don't remember in which section, but you can do a search.) And, of course, there is always vacation time. I managed to fit in a trip to provence this spring break. 🙂

Hi,

You can check AMSA's website, they have a bunch of listings for opportunities located all over the world to do your 4th year rotations, as well as some summer programs, the last i checked. The clinical sites are for the most part associated with medical schools and major hospitals in the area that you will be doing your rotations, and the majority of the listings also include any languange requirements with their contact info. As for myself, I am planning on doing the same thing 4th year, provided my wife lets me 😀 . Take care!
