Hi everyone,

I'm a med student that just completed my first year. I've searched the web (as well as this forum) and I've also spoken with administrators at my school and I can't seem to find any information on a particular subject, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Before deciding to go to med school, I seriously considered becoming a teacher. I really liked the idea of passing on knowledge to other people that could then use that knowledge to do great things and so on (I know, I'm an idealist🙂 But then it really hit me about 6 months ago. I'm curious to see if there are any organizations / government agencies out there that take US trained physicians, presumably in a primary care specialty, and send them oversees to train upcoming physicians and healthcare workers in less developed areas of the world. I feel like it would be a great way to combine my passions of medicine, teaching, and philanthropy. If anybody could help out I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

You can volunteer at missions hospitals/clinics in third world countries. There are some areas of the world that are in dire need of physicians. You will probably have to do a lot of googling to find these hospitals and then contact them individually.

A good starting point is http://www.medicalmissions.org

hi mods!!:hello:

this thread obviously has no relevance to people that read the allopathic forum. shouldn't it be moved to "General International Discussion"? :eyebrow:

You can also do something like Doctors without borders, but again they don't allow GP's, only specialists.

😕😕😕

If you look at the MSF website, they clearly state that they are looking for general practitioners, not just specialists. You have to have completed a residency, though.

Medical missions work is a great way to gain some international health experience and perspective. An MPH that focuses on international health is another great way to do that.
