Hope all is well with all if you, as an ambitious and wide-eyed third year (and someone that is heavily considering psychiatry), I always hear about the many things you could do with your career, however I never get enough depth about the actual routes like pros and cons, time commitments, pay, gratification etc... just to name a few of the things I’ve read and heard about:

1) Clinical practice - (though this is discussed heavily on here, I figured I would list it for completeness sake)
- pros and cons?
- hours?
- starting your own vs joining?
- pay?
- cash vs insurance
- what’s been your experience would you do it again?

2) Academia
- pros and cons?
- hours?
- Pay?
- what’s been your experience and would you do it again?

3) Going into Hospital/school administration
- Did you get another degree? (MBA, MPH, MHA)?
- Can you move up as far as you want in administration or does administration prefer another field (like IM?)
- Pros and cons?
- hours?
- pay?
- what’s been your experience and would you do it again?

4) working in industry (insurance/pharma/other)?
- how did you get involved?
- Did you get another degree?
- Pros and cons?
- hours?
- pay
- what’s been your experience and would you do it again?

5) independent medical examinations
- how did you get involved in this?
- Is it always honest or if you give people disability will the insurance company not call you back? Lol
- Pros and cons?
- hours?
- pay
- what’s been your experience and would you do it again?

6) contract work of any kind
- who did you work for and how did you get involved?
- ever contracted for like a VC firm?
- Pros and cons?
- hours?
- pay
- what’s been your experience and would you do it again?

I’m hoping these questions aren’t too invasive, I just want to get a basic understanding of the paradigm of work out there. Sharing your experience would be greatly appreciated.
