I love the idea of being a doctor. I think its something I'll want to do with my life. But what if I become a doctor, start practicing and decide it's not for me? Am I just screwed?

What kinds of opportunities are there in this world for MDs that do not including actually practicing medicine?

There's also Hospital administration, Public Health, Global Health. I personally like the idea of teaching and researching in my golden years.

Wow - I don't think I've ever seen anybody with 100k+ posts on any forum ever period. You take the cake, armybound. Anyway, you could do lots of things like sue other doctors, teach or just flat out research without seeing actual patients. It really depends on when / why you decide to stop treating people.

You could also do television (Dr. Oz 🙄) or commercials (that life alert guy). I don't think the surgeon general does much clinical work either.

I think that non-clinical opportunities are fairly limited, although they do exist.

An SDN mod, Dr Joseph Kim, maintains a website that features nonclinical job opportunities, linked below:

If you have to take out a significant amount of loans, however, it may be hard to pay them back if you aren't working in clinical medicine as this is most likely you're best option for earning the most money.

Clinical Research. Being a PI seems pretty cool!

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 12,583, not 112,583. I'm not sure why, but I noticed it jump from 11,000 to 112,000 a while back. Still a huge # of posts though!
