I was just informed that my residency contract next year will not be renewed, and I have been placed on administrative leave. My story is long-ish, so I will just say that there have been no disciplinary actions taken, however I did have a personal tragedy occur in my first year and after a period of formal remediation I was not able to adequately catch up.

My interpretation was that I was going to be renewed next year, and certainly didn't expect being placed on administrative leave. Thus, I am now considering whether to try to go through the match, or wait until next year after spending some time doing something constructive.

What are my options? Does anyone experienced in the match know what the potential outlook would be for me given my situation? What do I need in order to succeed in it at this time?

I will not be identifying my training program or the institution, so please don't ask. Although this conclusion is undesirable, they have been very supportive of me through this time.

Thanks in advance.

First, you need to decide whether you want to continue in your current field, or try for something else. The more competitive your current field is, the harder it will be to get a new spot.

Second, you need to find out whether your current program is going to help you (i.e. "jkf203 is a really nice guy/gal who works hard and does a great job, just fell behind and was unable to catch up. But, given a PGY-1 position to repeat would do a great job") vs "Not suited for this field".

Third, I assume you know that the match for this year is essentially over. Lists are due Feb 23rd, and most programs will have their lists in this week. You could register with the NRMP to try to scramble -- probably worth the $99 investment.

So:
1. Figure out what field(s) you might be interested in and competitive for.
2. Find out honestly what your program is going to say about you. Administrative leave sounds bad. Would they support you for a PGY-2 spot? a PGY-1 spot? This field? Another?
3. Register for the match and try to scramble. You'll need to get LOR's now, preferably one from your PD if possible. The scramble is a nightmare, but it's the next step.

Feel free to PM me your details, which I'll keep private.
