Am half way through internship in IM but thinking about quitting . What are some arguments for and against at least finishing the internship year, in terms of gainful employment, whether clinical or non, in the allied health fields?

Are you asking, "Why should I finish internship if I want to work in Allied Health (nursing, lab tech, etc)?"

Um, you shouldn't. Just quit and go back to nursing school if that's what you want to do.

We need some more info. What are the reasons you want to quit? Do you want to quit because you want to pursue another specialty? Do you want to quit because the program itself sucks? If you were to quit, what would you do? How would you start dealing with loans, keeping health insurance, paying the rent or mortgage, or putting food on the table? Do you have any plans of returning to medicine in the future? And if so, how would you explain your sudden departure? These are all serious questions you need to think LONG and HARD about before making any sudden decisions.

It's cold and dark, it's almost Christmas. It a depressing time of year. Are you far from family or friends?

Give yourself more time to think about this. Like, until May or June when it is warm and sunny again and you will almost be done with your first year. Make yourself some thick homemade soup, get into bed early and watch a cool movie - like the Matrix or something - and forget the 79 yo WM with COPD because he smoked 3 pk/day for 45 years, and who still insists on smoking through his trach.

Whatever you do... get some SSRIs and finish the internship and then quit. You will regret not finishing this year even if you are 100% convinced you want to quit. Finish the year.

Besides the good advice above about staying and completing at least your internship year, please be advised as that as much as we physicians think we can do the job of an allied health care provider, the training is different.

You are NOT eligible to work as a nurse or a PA or an RT or many other fields which require a certificate and perhaps a license. A certificate or license that you won't be given just because you've gone to medical school.

Without completing our internship you are not eligible for a full and unrestricted medical license so you cannot practice as a physician in any capacity. You cannot work as an allied health care provider unless you are willing to do things like a nurse's aide (which you could have done without having gone to college let alone medical school).

There are probably literally dozens of threads about not finishing residency and the job opportunities. They are limited, at least in the medical field, especially if you haven't finished internship. Please do a search for these threads.
