Hey everyone, my boyfriend took Step 1 and he has mixed feelings. I'm not really sure whether he barely passed or failed, but nevertheless, he doesn't feel too great about it.

Assuming he got a 76 on Step 1, but aced Step 2, what're his chances of getting into a residency program?

He does have good contacts and has good research papers published already; will he have a shot?

Any advice on how he should proceed?

Many thanks. 🙂

A residency, sure. Any particularly competitive residency, perhaps not. It really depends on what he's shooting for. Family Medicine? No problem. Derm, Rads, Ortho, Plastics, etc, etc? Probably not. Does he know he got a bad score or just FEEL like he got a bad score? I haven't taken Step I yet, but from what I understand most people feel like they bombed it and end up doing fine.

BTW, in case you haven't run across it, here's a good resource for seeing the average Step I scores for particular specialties:

charting the outcomes is the most amazing document ever. There should be a new one out for this or the next match. Its interesting to see the one person with step 1 of over 250 that didn't match in fam med. Had to be a jerk at interviews. anyway the document that PepperMD has suggested will let you see where and how competitive you are on various credentials

Thanks Pepper.

We haven't officially received the score, and I've been encouraging him to stay positive, but he insists he "knows himself" and assumes he did poorly.

I told him he should be fine, but we're just assuming the worst for now.

He's shooting for a GYN residency, btw....

So assuming he messed up on Step 1, that's not the end of the road, right? I'm just trying to understand the process...........

I have friends who got a 230-240 on the test and literally came out of it thinking they would have to retake it because they definitely failed. I wouldn't start sweating it too much until you get the score report in a few weeks.
