Depending on the area of research, you could consider applying for a foundation grant - AHA, Sarnoff (didn't think this was basic only, but I didn't apply), etc. You could also check if your hosting institution has a NIH T32 training grant for students, or if all else fails, see if your PI could pay you a nominal stipend.
