If I retake an elective course I got a D in back at my initial institution now even though I already received my degree two years ago, will Optomcas replace the old grade or will the grade just get added to my post bacc GPA? Will it boost my overall GPA if I retake it at the same institution? I know there are several gpas that are calculated: overall, prereq, undergrad, grad...

I know Optomcas does grade replacements but I dont know how it works if you've already received your degree.

Thank you for your advice.

There are several threads on this. Try searching "retake classes". I'd post the link but I'm iPhone ******ed.

I have searched, and the most useful thread i found was this:

"the truth about retaking classes"

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=9420799&highlight=optomcas+gpa#post9420799

However, I have not seen any direct mention of calculations for post bacc students. Will my repeated course still boost my GPA even though I have already completed my undergraduate degree? Ive been told that once you get your degree your undergrad GPA is set in stone, so any classes I take now will get calculated as grad/postgrad gpa. Im just wondering if it WILL indeed be advantageous gpa-wise to retake the elective course even though it was just a random class. ive been very confused about this and have heard different things from different counselors etc, so any advice is MUCH appreciated!

i'd also like to know what happens if you retake a class at another school?

is the mark averaged or what?

I know that if you retake the course at another school they average the scores...if you take it at the same institution they replace the grade... this generally applies to undergrad scores...

Im not sure how it works if you are a post bacc student and you retake courses, however. if anyone knows, id really appreciate your input 🙂

is this rule starting from 2009 or before 2009, where students could take courses from other schools and have that grade replaced?

also, it may be impossible to retake courses if you have moved from the country or from a state to another state etc.

can you really retake courses from a different school and have the grade replaced? i havent heard that...

Does anyone know how grade replacements work if you retake a course as a post bacc student?

If you retake a class at the same institution then the grade is REPLACED. If a similar/equivalent class is taken at another institution, then the grades are AVERAGED. Since optometry doesn't have any official post-bac programs (not that I'm aware of), any post-bac work you do is basically the same as taking it at another institution in that your grades are averaged. I'm not sure, however, if you graduate from a school and your file has been closed, if you return like a year later and retake courses if the grades are replaced or averaged. I have a feeling they would be averaged, but you would have to ask optomcas or schools.

I'm kinda in the same situation. I'm graduating this spring and planning on retaking the courses in the summer. But technically I have already graduated, so these are post-bacc courses as well.

But I need to get a C or above in these courses anyways, so I guess it is still beneficial to take them?

For sure. I wasted 2 semesters that I could have been taking classes. Maybe if I took classes I would be schooling in CA instead if TN. But I'm happy with where I'm going, I just wished I hadn't waited so long and stressed myself out. You're on the right track.
