Currently do all college of optometry teach surgery? If surgery is going to start being more popular in the profession, do any of you think that it would be wise to introduce it during the 3th year at EVERY college, followed by three year externships with OMDs or ODs? I feel this length of training would put many OMDs and the general public more at ease.....I know that Houston's OD school is in the process of building a surgery center for ODs....

It depends on what you call surgery; however, no and no.

Just a quick q, from your other thread, I got the general feeling that you wouldn't like surgery, so why all the questions about it?

As for the idea of incorporating surgery into the curriculum, I doubt it will be in the near future. For one, most OD's don't want to do surgery, and for those that do well I would want them to have more training. I believe a 2-3 year program for Optometrists that want to be able to carry out surgery would be an amazing idea. I don't know how the OMD's would feel though.

1) Agreed, I don't want to do surgeries. If I had wanted to...I would've gone to Medical or even Dental school.

2) 2-3 years? I say 4 years minimum. There is a lot of whole body background knowledge that we just wouldn't have.
