Optometric Tech?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello All! I am at a 4 year university majoring in biology but still undecided what I want to do with it. I recently began exploring the world of optometry (exciting!). I shadowed my first optometrist. He seemed very laid back. During the examinations he even allowed me to look through the equipment (I think it was the patients nerve cell?).

At the end of the day he suggested that a get a job being an optometric tech.

I had never heard of such a position before, but he explained it as taking down a patients background info then giving it to the optometrist. He said that his current office doesn't need one, so how would I go about searching for a job like this? Thanks in advance.

Hi. I am actually working as an optometric tech this summer before going to optometry school this fall. It is basically what your OD told you, you take patient histories, check their vision (near and far), color vision, pupils, and you get to do a lot of other tasks such as using an autorefractor and lensometer. Most offices offer bonuses for getting patients to let you take a retina picture and for the selling of contact lenses. You will get some GREAT patient care experience doing this!

Also, I think some offices may differ depending on how busy they are, they may train you to do more such as helping out in the optical department. PM me if you have any more questions.
