I am considering applying to the University of Arizona (Phoenix campus) medical school. I took the MCAT in the past, but only scored a 24. My GPA from undergrad is 3.7. In opto school, 2.9. Thinking of applying for c/o 2017 cycle.

What do you think I need to score on the MCAT to matriculate? How much does holding a doctorate help my chances?

Thanks is advance.

Well, it's possible to matriculate with a 24 if you apply broadly (at least 10 schools) and the rest of your application is stellar. (Shadowing, ECs, etc.) However, you'd be better off taking it again and getting your MCAT score up to at least a 27 for D.O. and 30+ for M.D. In my opinion, having the doctorate isn't going to help you much...

FutureDrB,

Thanks for your reply. I should add that I am a resident of Arizona. I enjoy optometry, but desire a more stimulating career.

No problem. I understand that it would be ideal to stay in Arizona, not only to save on a long-distance move, but of course for tuition purposes. Are you applying M.D. or D.O.? Either way, applying to a very limited number of schools, especially just one, is a huge gamble. Not trying to discourage you in any way, just want you to know. Also, be prepared to be questioned as to why you are switching from optometry to medicine. As long as you have a good reason it won't be too much of an issue, but the adcoms are going to question you about it for sure.

Applying to just one school, your chances are low.
Many schools get 10,000+ applications for 200 spots.
Due to having many qualified applicants, there is a lot of chance in the process.

Many schools have an average MCAT score in the 30-32 range.
Look on the school's website and you can find the numbers.

Having a doctorate probably won't make much difference.
It does make you app stand out some, but I doubt that GPA is going to impress anyone (even if it was average or above average at your school).
