Does anyone know if optometrists can perform surgery? where do they get the training to do so?

I don't think optometrists can perform surgery. Probably going to med school and becoming an ophthalmologist is the only way for a person to be able to perform surgeries.

It really depends on the state laws where you practice. OK allows OD's to perform some surgeries. Here's a link to an article from 2004:

Yeah, I think WV just passed a laser law too. That's it though, a couple lasers in a couple states. Some states let you do minor procedures like lancing chalazions and things.
