Optometry Degree

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you attend an accredited American optometry school (or PR, but not sure about waterloo) you are CAPABLE of practicing anywhere in the US once you pass the national boards, and get your OD. But you must obtain a license to practice in the state in which you wish to practice before you can do anything. If you change locations to a new state, you must again obtain licensure in that state before beginning to practice. Or at least that's how I understand it. 😛

so what happens if you graduate from one of the new schools that is not accredited?

You do not graduate from an unaccredited school. The way it works is that the school does not get full accreditation until the FIRST GRADUATING CLASS, at which time the school then becomes fully accredited. That is the "promise" to the first 4 classes that come in and historically, no school that has reached the accrediation level to admit its first class has ever failed to reach final accrediation. not something you need to be concerned about (though maybe evaluating how prepared you will be to pass a board exam based on the school's board pass history rate will be difficult when no such history exists)
