I will be taking the OAT in a month and Im just getting nervous about my chances of getting into optometry school. My GPA is kind of low, 3.0, though I have taken all of the required courses except for maybe one. Just finished Biochemistry. I will be a senior at the University of Pittsburgh and took all of my classes there. I didn't take a OAT prep class but I did get some practice materials and I plan to spend the next month studying.

Some things that might help me stand apart from other students is that I have worked at Lenscrafters as an eyewear consultant for almost three years now. An eyewear consultant is basically an optician that is not licensed. I know more about the store, the lab, and the lenses than most of the opticians in the store though 😛. I have a lot of time watching the doctors in the store and have picked up a lot of good information from them. I am also good friends with another optometrist who I'm sure will write me a glowing letter of recommendation.

Finally I am an organizer for my store's OneSight program, a charity that accepts donated glasses and then takes applications from people who can't afford new glasses for whatever reason. We use the donated frames and get these people in free sets of glasses with lenses that work just for them. I also am an organizer for the Pittsburgh chapter's American Chemical Society's "National Chemistry Week" at the Carnegie Science Center downtown each year, where different schools and companies gather to promote chemistry in the community.

My pre-rew GPA is lower than my overall GPA, so that combined with the fact that my OAT test materials are scaring the HECK out of me is making me pretty nervous. Anyone have some encouragement? Or some suggestions to increase my chances?

I am actually in the same boat as you are, except I am going into my junior year at Pitt. My GPA is the same and my pre-reqs are a bit lower. I took the OAT a few days ago and did slightly above avg, so I am pretty nervous too! I am applying to a few schools for next year to see if I can get into the 3+4 programs that are offered, but idk we will see what happens. This prob doesn't help you too much, but I got excited when I saw that you went to PITT..but good luck and I would say not to give up!

If your pre-req GPA's are below 3.0 you guys need to study your butts off for the OAT and do extremely well. The schools want to know that you can handle grad-school level science courses, and if you're pulling C's in undergrad science courses, it may not cut it. Also depends on your grade trends - have they gotten better or worse with time? Work as hard as you can to do awesome on the OAT and that coupled with a strong application will help you. Good luck, y'all. 👍

dude. you can do it. seriously if you really want it, just study hard on that OAT. I'm kinda in the same situation and my OAT is OCT 2nd. I'm really nervous and scared but you know what, all I can do and will do is my best right now. Study as much as I can and try. I might not do that well on my OAT or I might 🙂D lol) and I might not get into an Optometry school, but seriously if you really want it and it's your passion and goal, there shouldn't be anything in the way. If I don't get in, I'll take classes, raise my gpa, and study harder. there's no hurt in trying. so what you should be thinking now, is just doing your best on that OAT! 😀 gluck! and study hard!

Well, my OAT is tomorrow. I just took the opted practice test and got the following:

400 Reading Comp
330 Gen Chem
330 Bio
320 O Chem
310 Physics
337 Academic Average
330 Total Science

Not bad....I feel better at least. I'll let you know how it goes, then its time to submit my applications!

I would definitely say keep trying, but be prepared to deal with the potential rejection.

definitely agree.. if you have a passion and the motivation to get into optometry school, you should be able to get in
i got a 2.5 (roughly) GPA with an upward trend and a 330 AA / 340 TS OAT score..

i got rejected by most and accepted by others.
It is possible with hard work at dedication
I have 2+ years in optometry and great LoRs.

This is somewhat off topic, but does anyone know (or can point me in the direction of a thread, etc) which schools take the higher repeat grade (same univ, same class) instead of averaging the two like SUNY does? I know that OptomCAS takes the higher, but I heard some schools like to calculate GPA using different criteria.

ICO. They let you put down most recent grade (so not exactly the "higher" grade but hopefully you did better second time around). But on their sup app you have to note that it's been repeated.

Actually from what I was told by ICO, they average the repeats together, they don't only count the repeat grade like OptomCAS does. So from what you said it seems like ICO is similar to SUNY in that respect.

Thanks for the feedback! Planning on calling up the schools and asking them directly, but haven't had any time at all lately so this really helps!

What's the update on the OAT score and your app process?
