Hi,

I was wondering if current optometry students, or Optometrists could answer this question....

How important is it really to try and Ace every test that is thrown at you in your first or second year classes.....

The only reason I ask is because having gone through the first round of exams....I am doing ok (about class average (B) or just below)......but I feel as though that I should try even harder...even though I am really putting in my best effort.........all the other students in my class are always studying 24/7....no breaks...not leaving the campus.....and it really makes me question myself whether I should ever really take some time to wind down and just relax.....

So.....how important are they?

It's not important to "ace" every test. It IS important to put forth your best effort, not only at optometry school but at all things in your life. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

"Best effort" also does not mean living like a hermit 24/7 in a library or in your bedroom with your nose in a book.

"Best effort" is something different for everyone. If you honestly feel that you're putting in your best effort, then go with that and be at peace with yourself. If it's only your first round of exams, don't worry about it. As with any new school, it takes some time to adjust to the workload, and the expectations. I would continue on your present path.

You're doing fine. Don't worry about it. If you start falling into the C and D territory, maybe pick it up a little. Don't be one of those hermits.

The popular motto is "C=OD".. but I sure as heck would not want to be a doctor with a C average, I'd feel completely unprepared.

But remember, in the end, you're not learning for exams - you're learning for patients (and boards!).

Thanks guys......I'm definitely going to keep at it...but I guess I won't be as upset knowing I was 5% off from getting that 90 or 95...

👍

That's a fine attitude to have. I understand how you feel though...it totally goes against my programming, too. Sometimes it seems like studying for the "real world" and studying just for a test are not the same thing...but the former is what will help you in the long run. 🙂
