To friends of optometry around the world...

Thailand is a country in South East Asia with population of 60 millions. There are few eye doctors here, less than 600 to be exact. The reality of health care system in Thailand is really horrible. There are tons of patients that have to wait for months to get simple eye care procedures such as reading glasses. If training an ophthalmologist is very expensive, training an OD is not much cheaper in Thailand. In fact, Thai government could not afford to pay for training OD at American standards; however, this is exactly what Thailand needs. With donation in combination of $2,000 could provide a year worth of tuition for Thai OD students. Please send donations in US dollars by chasier checks or drafts under the name of "Doctor of Optometry Program" to the following address:

Ramkhamhaeng University
The Institute of Health Science
DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY PROGRAM
Bangkapi, Huamark, Bangkok 10240
THAILAND

I hope that by helping each others, we could build a better eye care for one country at a time.

Sincerely,

hi,

i'm glad you post this up. i'm originally from thailand so i know what it's like there. it's so sad to see people that cannot afford healthcare. Thailand do not have enough doctors, even less that will provide healthcare for free. i'm planning to go there after i get my OD degree on a mission to help my own people. There are many other third world countries that need our help. it would be nice to have doctors to go help them out and provide free healthcare. one more question...i know that thailand only has ophthalmologist as their eye doctor. do they have OD's now??? that's something new.

Is there any way you can post a link to a website... so people know this is a real place and no just some black hole/scam for cash

This guy can't be serious. I hope no one falls for this. This is almost as funny as the Nigerian scammers.

do you really think this is a scam?? hmm i know that this university really exist "Ramkhamhaeng University", but i really don't know that they have an OD program in thailand. like i said before i only know of ophthalmologist there. maybe OD training is something new. i'm going to try to findout if it really exist and i'll post another thread and let you guys know.

hi guys,

i checked out the university website http://www.ru.ac.th/english/ and there were NO OD program what so ever. unless someone else can CORRECT ME otherwise. this is a scam!! ok now i feel really stupid for thinking that this was real. since i'm thai american i thought that thailand is starting to be more up to date with other countries. i was actually excited that they were going to train OD's too. This was super low for someone to have put this up!!!!! using a third world country to make a scam. i hope karma catches up to them.

hehe

Ya i tried to google it yesterday, the university, and the stupid website wouldn't load. MAybe its firefox dunno, but ... don't send money haha.

$2000 is quiet a bit of free money now, isn't it?

As soon as I read this I thought it was a scam, but I thought people would get mad at me if I posted some snide remark.

Let's me explain ... Although, optometry program in Thailand just started with the curriculum at the same level of OD program in the US. Thailand have ever had OD program with such a level of education and training. It makes our ophthalmology friends really nervous. Ophthalmology felt that high standard optometry is a threat to ophthalmology profession. Ophthalmology joined together to make sure that optometry will not able to do what it should do. The country ODs number could not match the number of ophthalmologists since optometrists are outnumbered 20:1! The ophthalmologists also come up with a huge collective fund (and also information from their american friends and partners!) to fight ODs in every level (included giving politicians money!)

We are hanging by a thread ... we are not using money to give away to crook politicians or media agencies. Our main purpose for using this fund is building better optometrists that will mainly become teachers and professors for generations of optometrist in Thailand. Please help ...

hey i'm sorry that i thought this was a scam. i just checked out those website you listed. it really is interesting. i wish most of the writing on the website were in english, because i can read thai so i know it's legit, but other ppl can only read english. anyways, i'm so happy that thailand is training OD's now and are trying to be more up to date with the americans. hmm now that i think about it, if this were a scam then why would u ask ppl to write a check directly to the university right? then how would you have made money? since that university is real. i think it would help if you could tell us your background, and maybe give ppl that make donations some type of receipt so they will know where their money is going. oh btw i just wanted to clarify something you stated earlier. it said that with a COMBINATION of $2000 it can provide thai OD students with a year's worth of tuition, so ppl can donate as much or as little as they want. every little bit helps. I will be the first to donate if you can provide me with a receipt of some sort. this is the best english website to go to http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0PAK/is_4_56/ai_n6335325 and this one shows that the university really has OD program (sorry that it's in thai mostly) http://www.ru.ac.th/ihs/ thanks everyone for reading.

Thank you for understanding ... I understand very well how difficult optometry students in US have to face in order to archive an OD degree. If your situations are bad, Thai student situations are even worst since Thai government does not even have enough money for education. How do I know this? I also graduated from an optometry school in the US. I have taught couple classes with these students. I felt strongly that these students will be able to drive the future optometry in Thailand to the next level. However, education is not a cheap investment. Although, many students in Thailand will be able to pay for optometry education but these poor students will not able to continue without external helps. That is why I am asking you all for helping them hence you are also giving optometry in Thailand a greater fighting chance. Each of your small contributions will be combined to make a larger sum and distributed directly to specific funding account to help these needy students meeting tuition requirements. Once the office receives your mail, they will send you back the receipt stated amount of your donation.

Thank you for helping the future of optometry in Thailand …

Several professors from Indiana have gone there to teach classes. My Visual Optics class was videotaped and shown to the classes in Thailand I believe.

The OD is an American and Canadian title only; it's not widely used in other countries, especially a place like Thailand. My guess is that if they train optometrists at all in Thailand, it would be at the B.Opt or B.S. level like in the UK.

yeah, and thailand wants an OD title comparable to the US, itll be a very steep uphill climb indeed.

good luck

The degree for optometry in Thailand is Doctor of Optometry. The OD program in Thailand is very similar to the program at IU since it was partnered with IU - School of Optometry. Also, Philippine is another country that is using OD title. There are also several countries that would like to move their program away from B.Optom or B.S. since a title of Doctor of Optometry signified higher level of clinical oriented education program. After all, optometry degree titles are the evident of British influence in the region during the colonial era.

does the thailand government recognize this degree?

Ramkhamhaeng University is already a government agency by law directly responsible for higher education. Ministry of Public Health has anounced regulations about optometry only the last two years. They do recongize the degree and profession of optometry. Since optometry program just started in Thailand, there is enormous political pressure to watering down the program in optometry or even create double standards! Strange, right? It is not strange if you are in developing country
