One day take over the family's practice after their retirement

To all the Optometrists and Student Optometrists:

What are your reasons for choosing Optometry as opposed to Ophthalmology?
Less schooling, less competitive when it comes to school admissions(not every MD can be an ophthalmologist just because they want to..it's a competitive residency program to get into).

Fascinated with the eyes and visual system, how it connects to the brain, ocular disease etc. No interest in performing surgery. Less school, less malpractice insurance, more time to spend with family (depends) and I like the profession of Optometry better in general.

As a rule of thumb, most omd are typically much more intelligent than the average od. they battle in undergrad to secure a position in med school. then they battle it out in md school to fight for one of the most desired specialty programs. The top 1-2 students in each od school probably has a chance at it if it's the desire. the average md student and average od student has very little chance at becoming an omd via traditional routes.

I don't agree with that at all

Well, substitute "compulsiveness" and you can make the same argument.
