  1. Resident [Any Field]
First off - hello guys. I'm a long time lurker who's finally decided to come in from the cold. Long story short: IM residency -> critical care fellowship -> anesthesia residency. I'm a CA-2 now (PGY-7, oh mama what have I done) and have started the ole job search. I haven't decided on academics vs PP but depending on the location i chose both are options.

I'd like to hear from any of you guys who went through crit care via whatever path and how it has impacted your career as anesthesiologists. Do you every actually set foot in the unit, rotate months there, just use the added knowledge base as you take care of everyone, hate it and wish you could have those years back, etc......

I know there are certain lifestyle and loot issues that differentiate the fields (academics vs PP, pure OR vs mixed). I can't say they aren't part of the decision making but I mainly just want to find a job I like. The only people I see at work everyday are strict academic attds who alternate between the OR and ICU.

thanks dudes

Edit: please remove. I have no idea why this app keeps suggesting decade old threads as if they’re new.

I’m curious what they ended up doing. Also why you’d do IM —> CCM —> Anesthesia.

Actually met an attending who did just that. Would even moonlight in the unit during residency. But he just does OR and OB now.

Long road to do what they could have done with anesthesia alone.

since OP last logged in 12.5 years ago, I suggest not holding your breath waiting for them to reply
Yep I wasn't. Just thought it was interesting.

I have a buddy that did IM --> Pulm --> private practice --> CC fellowship --> Anes residency.

Similar guy a few years ahead of me in residency: IM>pulm/cc>pp pulm/cc>anes residency>academic anesthesia.

And we have many CC trained partners in my practice who practice straight anesthesia.
