Do any of you guys know where/what practice mode oral pathologists practice in?

Are oral pathologists in general restricted to large academic centers/dental schools or do you see any running private practices or teaming up with MD pathologist groups?

Thanks.

That's the only setup I've heard of but then again I only know one oral pathologist. I have heard of a couple oral surgeons who completed certificate training in oral pathology - they of course practice oral surgery.

It's moving that way. The academy recognized the need to diversify and they're now trying to get pathologists out of schools and into private practice, large medical centers (not necessarily affiliated with a dental school), and pathology groups.

I know that part of the role of the oral pathologist is to see patients having concurrent medical problems and/or oral presentations of disease. How does this differ from what oral medicine programs are trying to train their residents to do? In other words, while oral pathology incorporates clinical and non-clinical aspects, does oral medicine include only those "medical" ie clinical duties that oral pathologists also perform?

Oral medicine is just clinical oral path. And an oral medicine "specialist" is just a half trained oral pathologist.
