:scared:

I've taken speech class before, awhile back as an undergrad, and had to give presentations in other classes as well. However, whenever I go up in front of a huge classroom setting, I generally tend to freeze up and my speech is slurred and I sometimes stutter. Needless to say, I'm not really big into giving oral presentations in front of a class, especially a room full of knowledgeable people. I heard in pharmacy school though, you are required to give a couple of presentations each semester, oftentimes in front of a class size of 70 or more students!!! For the pharmacy students out there right now, is that true? How often do you have to go up and speak in front of your class and how do you combat the nerves in giving speeches? I know pharmacy school is stressful as it is, but I can't imagine how much worse it could be when you are asked to prepare presentations several times a year. Me scared. :scared: Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I gave a speech Friday in front of my class of 140. I was also projected up on the TVs. I will have to do that several times this semester.

These reports are important parts of the courses that I am in. I don't get nervous, because I am pretty outgoing.

Good communication skills are vital in your role as a pharmacist. Giving presentations to my class develops not only those skills, but helps me to become a better pharmacist by listening to my classmates point of view and comments, and building on those.

And there are reports of damaged tv monitors in ok.

I probably did it a couple dozen times in actual school school...then at minimum once a month during my 11 rotations out and about. The ones during rotations you'll do them in front of physicians, residents, med students, pharmacists in the field, nurses, and lay people, too. I did a Tysabri lecture to some quasi lay people who manned the Tysabri monitoring program, I did a discussion about pulmonary hypertension with a group of family medicine residents/docs, I did a primer on diabetes to a weight loss self help group...you really have experience with the full spectrum.

You'll quickly realize that most people know very little about the type of stuff you discuss, so you pretty much can't look "dumb". Most people just kinda get used to it. I remember the first year everyone was nervous as HELL talking in front of the class. Once you get used to your classmates (will def occur by 2nd semester), it's no big deal at all. You are just talking to your friends more or less. Then by the time rotations come along, the profs, docs, and residents don't scare you anymore. You realize they are just very flawed individuals like yourself that aren't judgmental at all towards students.

If it's that big of a deal, get some Xanax and beta blockers. That'll take care of it...

I'm pretty sure the majority of people don't enjoy doing presentations. 🙂

We never had to do a presentation in front of our whole class. Are class is pretty big and if everybody did a presentation it would take forever. For this reason we split up into several smaller groups anytime we had to do a presentation. I think the max was 10 people or something like that. With that being said, we didn't have to do many at all.

One thing that may help is to practice your presentation beforehand. Run through it a couple times in front of anyone you can con into listening - whether it's your SO, friends, or strangers on the bus. You won't be as likely to get tripped up during the real speech if you've practiced it dozens of times.

I'm sorry...the title of this thread sounds like a cheesy pharmacy porn movie, complete with a 70's soundtrack.😀
