Dear SDN,

I am currently looking for a job and will be applying to Med school for 09’. I am looking for a Medical Assistant job where I can be trained on-the-job. I came across a job for an Oral Surgery Assistant where they are willing to train me, even with no prior experience. I don’t have a huge interest in Dental Health or Dentistry, but I think it might be good experience. Is this something that sounds like it would be good clinical experience? Would I learn lots about the medical profession? Will I be asked why I didn’t apply to dental school at my interviews? Let me know your opinion. Thanks.

Is it a good clinical experience? Yes.

Will you be asked about why you are choosing medicine over dentistry? Yes, and you had better have a good answer. Some of the "bad" answers I've gotten to that question have been howlers.

I also worked in a similar position at an oral surgery clinic, one was a DMD and one was a DDS/MD.
I was not asked a single question during interviews as to the relevance of the job to medicine or why I didn't choose to go to into the dental profession. Just my 2 cents regarding my experience.
