Hey Everyone,

I have a question regarding loupes. I will have to pick my first pair as I start school at the end of the month and my school sent us the information regarding some of it. It looks like they will be getting them through Orascopic. There are a few options that they have and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with them. Do schools typically use many vendors or do they seem to stick with one?

For instance, the four choices that are available is:

SPORT OPTIONS:
  1. Oakley Flak Jacket
  2. RYDON by Rudy Project
ICONIC OPTIONS:

  1. Legend by Rudy Projcet
  2. HIRES 2
The light option offered is the Xeon Endeavour.

I am really interested in the iconic options because they seem to be pretty durable. A friend of mine had used the Nike Sport frames (yes they are different than the ones offered) and he seemed to say that they were cheap and flimsy. I like the DFV Buddy Holly ones but again, I don't know if I'll have the option to get those.

Thanks for the input!

Bump. Hows Lumadent lights compared to the lights that come packaged with Orascoptic or DFV? Which brand and magnification should I be interested in?

Some schools allow the students to choose and other schools choose a single company for you. The most important part of the loupe is the magnification. You want to get a magnification of 3.5x or greater for DFV or 4.3x or greater for Orascoptic. Magnification is not standardized. Because high magnification loupes are heavier, you should get a sturdy frame made of aluminum or titanium. All of the major companies have high enough quality that it really comes down to preference and customer service. There are differences in quality but it's clinically negligible and you probably won't notice it. If I had to buy loupes again, I'd buy flip up 3.5x Zeiss from Henry Schein. If you're serious about buying Zeiss, contact Henry Schein for student discount.

2.5x on any loupe is junk. It's almost no better than the naked eye. All it does is allow you to have good posture and it does little in helping you see more.

Get the cheapest light (Lumadent or Featherlight/Ultralight).
