Hello Everyone,

So its that time of year when D1's have to buy loupes. I have searched through previous threads and couldn't find an answer to my question. I would greatly appreciate your input.

I am looking to buy loupes from either Orascoptic or Sergitel.
1. Orascoptic 3.3x High Res Plus - this is expanded view with the adjustable working distance. I really like these and the field view is huge which i really like, however, the loupes are pretty heavy (probably from the higher EV mag). also i like that the actual frame is metal and not plastic.

2. Surgitel 3.0x Mirco Prism - this was also really great. I think the field view was a little less than the orascoptic's, but the loupes felt a lot ligher. The oakley frames look great, but they are made of plastic which made me a little worried.

Either way, the price is about the same. Can anyone please shed some light on either or both of these.

thank you in advanced!

Neither have true 3.0x magnification like DFV. This is the main reason why you see greater field and depth of view in Orascoptic or Surgitel than DFV. I still prefer Orascoptic over DFV because DFV are less forgiving in terms of focus when you move your head even the slightest. Surgitel's 2.5x is like 1.7x from what I've read. If you wanted true 3.5x with Orascoptics, you'd have to go up to 3.8-4.3x. Since the 4.3x is only $100 more than 3.8x, I'd go with the 4.3x. I was quoted $1500 for the 4.3x on tiantium 01 frames.

If you wanted a notch higher in optic quality, you should go with Zeiss or Heine. You can get both from your local Henry-Schein dealer at a student discount. For the Heine's, I think it's around $900 for a 2.5x and $1,300 for 3.5x (longest working distance available is like 16 inches for the 3.5x however). Zeiss recently partnered up with Henry-Schein this summer so you should be able to get your hands one of them pretty easily now. I'm going to call Henry-Schein about the Zeiss tomorrow and find a quote.

Surgitel would be last on my list of choices.

Go with 2.5x or even 2x
galilean loupe. The weight savings is nice and the larger field of view will help you More than the extra mag will for general dentistry.

Thank you for the advice....I was looking at the field of view and for orascoptic. The 3.3 expanded field view is the same as the 2.5 galilean loupe. I thought since they have the same size field of view, I should opt for the better mag.

Is this type of thinking incorrect when looking for loupes?

I appreciate you help!

Thanks!

For what its worth, I really like my Orascoptic 3.8s. I do not notice the weight at all (much lighter than the DFVs)

For anyone who wanted to know about Zeiss from Henry-Schein, I was quoted around $1,600 for the 2.5x and $1,890 for any prism (including 4.0x). My school gets a 10% discount from MSRP.

I think it's ridiculous to pay $1,600 for only a 2.5x and I don't think anyone is going to buy em'. Surgitel and Orascoptic sells 2.5x for $600, DFV for $800, and Heine for $900. For the 2.5x, Zeiss costs more than twice as much as their leading competitor...smh

Hi there. Bmxbobby2004 which loupe did you end up going with? Are you happy with your choice?
