So I have been lucky enough to have extremely convenient exposure to OMFS and Pediatric dentistry, and have therefore been able to gain some hefty shadowing hours back home during the summers up until this point (I am currently a sophomore). However, my school schedule has been timed conveniently enough that I cannot really shadow any general dentists in my area during the year. Luckily I am studying for the DAT this summer and will have some free time to shadow once or twice a week. Does it look bad on an app if I have specialty hours before GP hours, and that my GP hours arent being built on until the summer of my soph. year? Or does it not really matter unless I'm packing in 100+ in the last 3 months?

You're thinking too much into it. Just focus on getting those GP shadowing hours and you'll be fine..having the specialty hours beforehand won't hurt you

A vast majority of my time was spent working for specialists, but I do think that having some exposure to GPs is important for your own personal benefit and in the eyes of admissions committees. As long as you have some solid hours with generalists, you should be fine.

Alright thank you! I was thinking the same thing. Is there a timeframe of getting the hours where it looks like I'm just cramming them in?

Thank you thank you! I probably think that ADCOM is a lot more relentless than they really are.

What you're planning to do is just fine. Shadow for several hours, a couple times a week, and spread that over a few months, that should be more than enough. Since you're only still a sophomore, you have plenty of time to not have to cram all your hours in at the last minute.

The atmosphere in a pedo or an os office is not the same.

No I understand this. I just don't know what the purpose of saying the atmospheres are different in relation to my post..

He's basically saying that the the day-to-day experience of shadowing a GP will be different from that of a specialist. Shadowing a specialist like a OMFS is a great experience, but isn't really indicative to what you'll see in a normal dentist's office. Pedo is a little more like a GP, but not quite

Yeah I definitely understand that. But I'd rather have specialist hours than no hours at all, and there was no way I was passing up shadowing in these fields when the opportunity fell on my lap.
