I have schaums organic chem. It has a lot of practice questions in it. I never really used it to prepare though because I already had a good college textbook.

Guys I strongly recommend Organic Odyssey to study orgo. This book is great. It has all the concepts that are being reinforced with a lot of practice problems and solutions. This book simplifies all the major organic chem concepts and it is a lot easier to read than textbooks such as Wade. Organic Odyssey contains the simplified version of every chapter of Organic chemistry book without losing any bit of information. This book just presents the information in a more understandible way. If you need to learn Organic Chemistry for DAT or anything else, you will not regret buying Organic Odyssey.

I also agree that schaum's outline of organic chemistry has lots of good practice problems, but I personally feel that studying straight from your textbook or schaum's is overkill. The organic section on the actual DAT test is fairly basic and I felt that Kaplan's book does a good enough job of covering only what you need to know for the exam. It doesn't hurt to do the extra studying if you have the time, but if you know kaplan you will get in the 20s.

Organic Odyssey .... It does cost about $130 shipped but man... it really gives you the "little" edge...

I have never taken Organic before (the class), nor have I ever taken general 2 (Will be taking them both this coming FALL)....
So what does a software developer do when he gets home after work during the 4 months off of school (summer break) ?

I started self learning Orgo starting from a free text book my professor gave me that was published back in 1999. However, I felt that the text book was giving me a good foundation of the ideas, but not much problem solving, the problems at the back of the chapters are like "here is an industry problem with the chlorification of methan blah blah what happens when you do this this blah blah"... It just wasn't giving me any real hard-core organic concepts to focus hard on....

Anyways, I decided to buy the Odyssey about a month ago and found it REALLY helpful.... After I finish a specific chapter (or sometimes 2 chapters at a time) I do the problems at the end of the chapter, then I crack open the Odyssey and finish all the problems for the specific chapter....

So far, Im doing really well, I get about 70% of the odyssey problems right, but some of those problems are REALLY tricky

So is it agreed that the schaums organic book is wayyy too much? I've been trying to get through it but it hasn't been easy. Should I give up and try the odyssey book? 🙄

The only time I recommend Odyssey is if you have some what a foundation for Orgo... If you don't, Odyssey woun't build you a new foundation....

Trust me on this, I learned that the hard way, I tried to answer some odyssey questions without reading over the chapters in an actual orgo text book and I found myself TOTALLY lost when I read the explanations for the answers in odyssey....

In my honest opinion, a person only needs 2 orgo books, 1 is the main text book (from the college) and other should be problems & solutions. I don't have Schaums orgo, but thats only because I have Odyssey.

schaums in general is overkill EXCEPT for that handful of bio topics that kaplan tends to gloss over.

with that said, i tried to look through schaums chem before i took the test, and it was way, way too detailed for what you have to know.

schaums orgo probably has some problems you can do, but i'd say that between the kaplan, topscore, achiever, and like 200 destroyer problems, you should be good to go.

Just a word of caution regarding Schaums for organic and general chemistry.

Not only is it way off for DAT purposes...it's way off for most classes as well. The general chemistry and organic chemistry guides by Schaums are the worst in the series. Stay away at all costs.

The same goes for the general chemistry and organic chemistry by problem solvers.

You're much better off w/ an AP chemistry book for gchem.

If you want to take your ochem skills to a whole new level Organic Chemistry Odyssey is the way to go. There is nothing like it on the market. Specifically designed for standardized tests.
