I will be taking them this fall and would like to know if you guys have any advice or tips in those classes? More specifically, what should I know or have a very clear understanding of before entering these two classes? Like topics, concepts, problems etc. from previous courses.

Oh yeah, I will also be taking A+P as well but I doubt I need to know anything about it before hand.

Any help is appreciated 👍

allow yourself more time than you think to study and review Org Chem. Don't underestimate it. I did the first time and got in way over my head and had to retake it. While there is a lot to memorize, you also need to understand WTH is going on with the reactions or you will get lost.

The first ochem is pretty simple. Make sure you take that class seriously because the difficulty of the second course will depend on how well you know the material from the first course. Knowing your acid/base chemistry in g.chem should help in someway.

Agreed...I found second semester of O CHM to be the challenge. For the first semester of O CHM, you don't need that much information on gen chem...Hell if you got through gen chm, then you got through the hardest part (atleast for me; I hate math lol) since there is close to no math involved. As said above, make sure you pay attention in O CHM 1, since O CHM 2's difficulty ramps up significantly...If you have a decent memory then you should be fine.

I'll reaffirm the need to keep up on O Chem. If you're not sure if you've been studying enough, you haven't been studying enough. One of the few classes where I would recommend going over it almost every day. It's one of three class I have taken where you cannot slack for a minute.

Calc I is easy. It pissed me off at the end because you spend all this time learning limits and such so you can do derivatives... and then derivatives are so damned easy lol

I know right.

The better your algebra is, the better you will do in Calculus. In O Chem, I would just stay on top of it as it comes at you. I don't think there's much foundational stuff, other than orbitals and bond theory.

Whatever you do, avoid taking Orgo in the summer at all cost. You will regret it, especially if its the 2nd part in the sequence.👎

How are you doing in the class so far? My final is this Thursday and I can't wait until it's over!

Don't even ask.😡 I have a B right now in the class. No one actually has an A. There are like a couple of Bs and a bunch of Cs. The whole thing has been a nightmare. They were rotating professors in the 4 week class. We are on professor #3. My final is Thursday too. Can't wait for it to be over.

You have the national standardized O-Chem exam as your final right? If you do, this exam is easy! I had a B going into it and ended up with an A in the course. You just have to make sure you know the basics from both semesters of O-Chem and you should be good 👍

They actually stopped using that standardized test at my school. Not sure if they will change that this time. Pretty much our tests are over nomenclature and synthesis only. But as you know with the synthesis it's not always easy to remember what will happen with a certain reagents. Plus his reactions will have a minimum of 5 steps in order to get to the desired products. I always hated Diels-Alder reactions.👎

Uh... I wouldn't say the test is easy. Many schools simply curve the grades which means you don't have to get as many right in order to get an A on it.

+1,000 What a terrible idea this was, it ruined my summer.

Looking back, organic 1 really wasn't as difficult as it seemed at the time, but still tough. If you can catch on how to name and draw your structures quickly you will be fine. For organic 2 however, I would recommend really knowing your reagents backwards and forwards.

👍

Those reagents can be a pain in the you-know-what. I have to memorize a bunch of them for carbonyl compounds. Reducing, oxidizing, preparing, forming epoxides, Demercuration...:scared:

Synthesis is killing me.

I totally feel your pain. There are so many reagents to remember 😡

I bet your class is nowhere near as bad as mine....Hahaha!!!

Huh...how'd you find out..geeze I'm lost! Yeah I'll go...I'm frustrated.....I already emailed the vp.......around 230.....did you write yours?

I pretty much told her that we felt insulted because no one wants to speak to us and address the issue. She said she was gonna be busy for a while but she will make the time then to answer, or at least attempt to answer, questions we may have.

I am gonna email it later.

Cool.....I'll be there early....I gotta get back to studying...later!

Haha, I disagree. Orgo summer ftw! That isn't to say your summer will be enjoyable in the least, but it's much better than stretching that torture out over a regular semester.

Well if you had to endure what I did this past summer in the class, then you would certainly agree. I am just so happy that tomorrow is the last day.:woot:
