Couple questions regarding nomenclature for O. Chem:

What is the priority of different groups, ie alkene or halogen?

What is the proper IUPAC name for an alkene

Picture this molecule:

A cyclohexene with Br in position 1, and a methyl group in position 2 (ortho if it were a benzene) the only double bond is after the methyl group and not between the Bromine and the methyl.

Am I correct stating: 1 bromo, 2 methyl cyclohex-2-ene?

thanks

Alkene>halogen

What is the proper IUPAC name for an alkene

what do you mean?

I think it would be 3-bromo-2-methylcyclohexene

I agree with DrY....on cyclic molecules, double bonds have priority, start your counting of substituents from the double with with the lowest numbers possible. Without the double bond, then the substituents go in alphabetical order. For example: 1-Bromo-2-methylcyclohexane. Again, that's for no double bonds.
