organic chem teachers and rate my professors

I just transferred to a university from a cc. I signed up for organic 1 with this teacher who has horrible ratings on rate my professor. Before I wasn't able to sign up for organic 1 because all of the classes were full, but I checked at the right time and found an open slot. I'm guessing there is a bunch of goons in organic 1 who get bad grades and blame it on the teacher. Have any of you had a similar experience?

Which school and which teacher? Odd are that some one this board has had them or atleast heard of them, and they could enlighten you as to whether its myth or fact.

No, they are generally correct. Rate my professor is usually pretty acurate. Have fun in orgo, if you want to succeed, you should be prepared to teach yourself 50% of orgo. The books are usually pretty self explanatory. What type of orgo book do you have? Mine was honestly great and was easy to read. Orgo just sucks in general. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODLUCK

lot of orgo teachers suck. My orgo one teacgher was bad, but I studied hard and got an A ( class average 50%). Orgo 2 had great teacher. Sci classes are allways hit or miss regarding teachers. Just work hard and you will do ok.

I honestly wouldn't trust it unless you talk to someone who has had that teacher and can clearly tell you why they were bad profs. Students tend give poor ratings to teachers unless they hand them an easy A. Orgo isn't easy, so most profs will get poor ratings.

What's his seniority? If he's got more than 10 years of teching experience for organic chemistry, then go for it. You're going to learn and benefit a lot from his class.

you cant go around looking for classes or profs that are going to be easy. challenge yourself, if its hard work harder. It just feels cheap to me to go and find a class that you know is to be easy.

Senority doesn't necessarily mean that a professor is a good instructor, it often just means that they have been successful researchers and have produced enough publications to keep the university happy. Furthermore, Ochem is a course that is, by nature, very dry and difficult to teach. Couple that with Ochem 1 and 2 being an entry level Ochem course and you have a very unenjoyable course to teach. With some professors, it is quite evident that they dont care to teach the class. Probably because their labs and graduate students (who are actually interested in Ochem) are much more fun.

I don't think it is uncommon to find Ochem professors that are lacking...however, the course by nature is one that you almost have to teach yourself so the professor's teaching ability is not as important as his or her ability to create tests and grading policy.

I totally agree but its not necessarily the instructors fault. I've had professors that others have thought were great but they just didn't jive with my learning style. There are many differences between individuals both in and out of the classroom.

I think ratemyprofessor gives you an idea of how much you should be studying for the tests and the class in general. If they got a ton of bad reviews chances are it is because they expect you to know a lot. I was told when studying for organic chem you should study 2.5-3 hours after every lecture. If you know everything in the chapter there is nothing the professor can throw to you on the test that you wont know.

Rate My Professor is generally quite accurate. I have taken classes with several professors and their ratings are dead on.

what are you going to do in Dental school if you think one professor is being difficult? Man (or woman)-up and take a class taught by a difficult professor... a lot of us have.
