Hey everyone! I need some advice. My university got a new O.Chem professor. He is mainly research and is a very poor teacher. He is very inconsistent, constantly has errors on his slides and study questions, his English is very poor and our entire semester is based on one midterm and a final. We just had our midterm and our class average was 56%. I felt like I got hit with a bag of bricks. The questions were not very familiar to much of anything he put on our review and told us to focus studying. So, I am spending spring break just with my stomach in knots. Last semester many struggled and th comments that came out on teacher evaluations he shared and emailed to all the returning students. They were bad. I almost didn't register for his class when I saw he was teaching this spring but, that is the only course. In the fall, I got an A in lab and a C in his lecture. I see the exact same thing happening this spring again. What would you do? Withdraw? And retake 1 and 2, elsewhere? I just feel like my time, effort and tuition has been wasted. No one is learning anything, except from their book and tutors. I work full-time and commute to campus. It is making pharmacy school looking farther and farther away for me. I am a certified tech with over 5 years of experience. So, any thoughts? It just makes me so frustrated and I feel pretty helpless at this point in th game. Thanks!

Honestly, I think you're fine. I got a C in first semester and I got in everywhere I applied. The AdComs understand what its like being a student with multiple obligations. Nailing the Chemistry section of the PCAT will also help.

Just be aware of the requirements of the schools you wish to attend. Some will not take a grade lower than a B. I was going to suggest books and tutors but you have that listed. Honestly (and I hope I'm wrong) I expect most classes in pharmacy school to be like this.

I don't know any schools that REQUIRE a B.. but as for your professor being a poor teacher, get used to it. No offense, but researchers aren't always good teachers and vice versa. It is something you will see quite a bit at universities and if you can't deal with one bad teacher than pharm school might be a brutal wake up call.

I got a 74% in Ochem and it was an A-. The curve will correct for a bad teacher or an incredibly difficult class. So either way a C+B- should be average. If you are still average / below average then once again, get used to it. Short of having no social life, you will probably get similar or worse grades in pharm school. It will be more competitive than an undergraduate Ochem class so just do your best and you will (hopefully) be fine.

My school required a B for the Ochem and A&P series. Can't apply without at least a B.

For anyone having trouble with O-Chem, Gen-Chem, or physics... You gotta check this website out. 70% of my studying comes directly off of this site and I have all A's.

👍 and I would add, go to his office hour. Ask him to clarify all that stuff you dont get. Maybe he will get tired of you asking questions, and tell you "that wont be on the test". If not, hopefully he clarify all your questions or give you hint for the exam. I am not sure if you have discussion section with a teaching assistant, but I would go to the TA next.

I got a C in first semester orgo- and was accepted everywhere I applied..If I could go back I'd save those wasted tears. It'll be okay...

Thank you all for your advice. I learned the pharmacy school at my campus is apparently not to happy and are not looking into the lecture grade as they typically do. I am an A and B student so that is why this is very serious and important to me. Time to buck up and get it done regardless, just stressed out with this class and professor. It is more embarrassing than anything coming from a school that I thought a lot of at one point in my life. Thanks again.

i thought it was common for o. chem exam averages to be low? does your prof not curve? like for o. chem 1 at my school, our averages were consistently in the 40's and 50's. with the end of semester curve if you averaged ~55% you'd get a C, ~65% a B and ~75%+ an A..

My OChem was 87 and up = A, 82-86 AB, ...down to 65% being a D. I think in my class of 80, about 15-20 got D's and F's.
