Quick question for you guys...

I'm currently taking a year of chemistry and calculus. This summer I'm either going to take organic or biology. Then next year I'll take either organic or biology and physics. What do you reccomend?

Is it possible to take orgo w/o a biology background?

Would the volume of material in either be too much to take a whole year's worth during the summer? (I'll be taking a year's worth of latin in the summer also...)

Would it be preferable to take bio or orgo next year with physics?

Thanks!

I would personally do o-chem during the summer then bio with physics and calculus, but it really doesn't matter. In my opinion organic is a lot of conceptual stuff as opposed to biology which is a lot of memorization (edit: easier to learn more and a smaller amount of time, ie summer course.) Plus some foundation of organic chemistry can help with biology because usually the first chapter or so of Bio I is review of gen chem and o-chem that applies to biology (carbohydrates, fats/lipids, and so on) so you'll have a couple of weeks to take it easy while you review.

I wouldn't worry about the volume of material crammed into a small frame of time. That's something you're going to have to get used to before medical school.

I would say organic certainly doesn't require bio. At the end of orgo II bio might help give you context for carbohydrates and the tiny bit of biochemistry you'll see, but nothing terrible.

I'd say bio over organic, but bio is still a ton of material, depending on the course. I'd do something over the summer that you've already had in some way. If you had high school or AP bio, do bio. What about physics I? In MY opinion that would probably be the easiest thing to do during a summer.

In my bio class, the first 6 chapters were organic and biochem. It was a really hard test for those of us who had no organic and had only taken the first semester of Gen Chem. I think bio classes like that should have a pre-requisite, but that's just me.

Basically, both subjects require a lot of memorizations and are very time consuming. It really depends on you, certain people prefer ochem over bio while others would prefer biol over ochem. If it was me, i would go with the ochem first because, for me, ochem is a little bit easier to grasp the concepts being taught........

Even when I took Human A&P there was a chapter mainly on carbohydrates. All we really had to do was memorize some of the main monosacharrides and the properties of the polysacharrides. It was a cake walk for me because I had survey to organic and biochem (nursing class) but everyone else was studying their asses off to memorize them.

That why I say take o-chem first, a lot of organic chemistry is used in biology. Plus you can remember more faster because most of o-chem I is just learning to name different kinds of organic compounds and a few different reactions.

judging by ur post, i can tell that u are probably not very intelligent and are one of those people who try to space out all their science classes so they are taking 1 a year... so take orgo, b/c summer classes are usually easier

Casting aspersions on someone's intelligence is hardly appropriate.

Anyway, you (as in the original poster) might want to talk to other people in your school about the subject, particularly with respect to summer classes because while sometimes easier, summer classes obviously move at a faster pace, and the curve is usually much higher because many (at least at my school) use summer semesters to re-take courses they failed during the year. Consequently, they get really high grades, and you get ******* over 🙄
