sorry for asking to many question but i rather ask. Is sulfonation only reaction that is reversible under heat? Why not other reaction mention in destroyer are not reversible? Question 180/2017 version.

As a good general rule for the DAT exam and most undergraduate courses, sulfonation is the only reversible reaction. However.......a t-butyl group once protonated under highly acidic conditions can also be removed !!!!! Shocked ? yeah...me too. I was not aware of this in my early chemistry studies , but have done it often to block the para position, then remove it. We call this ipso substitution. Anther reaction that we can put a reagent on and off would be a trimethylsilyl group. We would add Si (Ch3)3Cl......do any needed chemistry them remove it with strong acid or a reagent called TBAF. The bottom line is that for the DAT exam, sulfonation would be the only reaction that you need to know is reversible. Again, we often use this reaction to block out a designated position.
