How many of you thought that organic chemistry was one of your most challenging undergrad courses?

i thought organic 1 and 2 sucked because i had terrible profs and consequently didn't learn the material well. i took advanced organic 1 and 2 and got As in both and absolutely loved them because the profs were amazing and actually taught well.

EDIT: looks like i didn't even answer the question haha. i thought intro was tough (probably my fault) and found advanced to be pretty straightforward (put more effort in). organic isnt that bad.

I got one of my few B's in orgo II, the class was really hard for me, well the DAT was a joke 24 on orgo.

It was definitely the most challenging course I took.

Many non-orgo courses, such as genetics, required a lot of effortful work. But in those courses, I was almost always confident that I knew how to tackle the material: I set my goals and plugged forth as I always had, and all was well.

Orgo was different. Up until the very end, I was rarely ever confident that I knew what I was doing. 🙁 But I survived! I managed a 19 on the DAT Orgo section, so I must've done something right.

I heard sooo much as a freshman was how hard organic was going to be! I even had a genius math prof tell me orgo lab was enough to make him not wanna go to med school? By the time I got in I expected it to be so hard I didnt even try for an A I settled for a B before I even started! As it went on I realized the people who were telling me how hard organic was were lazy as crap and if you were willing to work every single problem you would dominate orgo! I made a B in 1 and A in 2. I thought 2 was much easier than 1. it just made more sense! lol! Forget orgo let me tell you how insane BioChem is ! Orgo is a cake walk compared to biochem get ready! lol good luck!

I'm just in my second semester of General Chem..it's very easy and I'm getting A's. But I keep hearing these stories about how bad O-Chem is....for the people that had trouble in O-Chem,

what would you suggest I do to ensure that I get an A?

study it

I can almost guarantee you that every one who is telling you how hard it is is probally not doing so hot because they are not working problems! you can only read so much orgo b4 you have to pick up a pencil and draw arrows and follow electrons!! I can honestly say that orgo was the easiest science class ive had! if you just learn the mechs and work problems and a lot in between you will do fine! I say work problems i dont mean work a few when you get home from work ! the only way to guarantee an A is to go off on it every day and work every problem as many times as you can!! try it it works i promise!
good luck!

all the reactions possible 😀

chem is wonderful--more problems=higher grade

i hate o chem.
at my school, bio majors are forced to take only 1 term of ochem...but the content covered is equivalent to whats normally covered in 2 terms at other schools.
as a result, the time spent learning each topic was significanly reduced.

the average for that damned course has been in the low 50's the last 4 years running and the department hasn't made any changes.👎

if you have a good prof you'll prob do well. this is of course assuming you'll work as many problems as you can. i made an A in orgo I but i had to retake orgo II only to make a B+ 🙁

but to defend my self, i almost dropped out of school due to family problems that semester...(gparents died within 5 months of each other 🙁🙁)

I really had some good teachers that made the class fun. I had heard from a lot of students that it was the hardest class in the world, but really it was cake. Of course I had to work my butt off! I found a couple of really good students and studied with them doing practice problems almost daily and when the tests rolled around they were easy!

It was all about the professors for me. How good they were ( in my opinion) reflected how much I learned and how much I enjoyed the material. I wouldn't say O-chem is hard, but you have to put effort into learning and understanding it. After that its easy

a lot of it had to do with the professors for me too. first semester i got an A-, 2nd semester i decided to switch profs to accomodate my schedule and i got my first C+ ever. tough class, but very do-able. ditto to what was said above about working the problems. DO IT.

O Chem was a breeze compare to P Chem...

o chem doesn't hold a candle to bio chem, o chem 1 is more challenging just because you have never seen the info before.

My toughest science courses were bio chem and zoology

ochem was decent. i do pretty well in upper division courses. and biochem, oh sweet biochem - it's very dear to my heart. I loved biochem. It was freaking intense but those are the classes I can respect and I do well in them.

but i suck at math. i got D's in my calc classes. i'm a sorry excuse for an asian. =/

since grade 10 I have been doing bad on the orgo part of chemistry,, I always try to avoid studying for it, 6 years later I still suffer from this phobia, I got bit on the orgo section of the dat

at my school it was all about memorization, which totally blew because i hate that... and the questions were all meant to trick you.... and then the average would be like a 60% so if you got a 68% you could have a solid B.... but you'd still come out feeling like cr*p because really you didnt know a darn thing... and basically I came away knowing very little

I'm taking Orgo 1 this semester, and I must say it's not easy. However, I have also noticed that it isn't my fault for screwing up in the course; it's the professor's fault for putting all the tough problems on the exams. I mean, Organic Chemistry is a pretty easy subject, but it depends on your teacher: He/she can make your life a living hell or make the course enjoyable. In my case, the lecture material is not enough to do well on the test...not even the textbook. It's that terrible. And on top of it, we don't even get a "scaled" or "curved" score. Pretty ridiculous, huh? I do my part in studying though...I've given 100% effort since day 1 in O-Chem.

Anyhow, I'm retaking my Orgo 1 class next semester...

I am taking Genome science right now. Man it's definitely harder than ochem. 🙁
