Organic Substitution?!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are there any Pharmacy schools that will accept 1 semester of Organic and 1 semester of Biochemistry? I have only had organic one and I am fixing to graduate...I don't want to go back to school to take Organic 2😕

I doubt it

very doubtful, organic 2 is important in pharmacy... I'd say Organic 1 and Organic 2 are probably the most important prerequisites on the prereq list.

No, Organic I pretty much teaches you the ground work. Organic II is when you really get into reactions.

.... biochemistry and orgo II are totally different. Why would you even think about trying to substitute one with the other?

Wow, for a second I thought this was a necro thread. A few mos. ago we had a similar question, about how different Organic was from Biochem, lol.

Not a chance in hell, OP.

I don't even know how one can take biochem w/out organic 2, unless it's overview course for nutrion and nursing majors. 😕 At my undergrad, if you sooo much as tried taking biochem w/out organic 2, you'd be dropped within the first day of class.

Ya know, now that I think about it that doesn't make sense either.

I know at one of the larger schools in the region they have different biochem classes. One for bio majors, one for chem majors, one for non-science majors (whatever the hell that means).

We have a Biochemistry for Life Science Majors that doesn't require anything beyond Inorganic chemistry. This is not the same Biochemistry that I took... we also had various levels of A&P, same purpose, even Calculus had separate classes designed for Major X or Y, like Phathead beat me to saying. 😛

Our school only offers one biochem class - prereq is Modern Bio (freshman bio class), Orgo I is a coreq. They don't care if you take orgo II or not. Biochem at our school is very doable without any orgo II.

I think that ours require prgo II as a pre-req but you don't need it to understand the course (at least in my opinon). You couldn't pass without orgo I but orgo II would be a bonus but not a requirement.

That's probably because you went to Cal state if I remember correctly, so did I and that's how the state system is organized.

This school is one I was looking at and in their curriculum (5 year program) you don't take org I and org II until your first year in the program. They only have 30 hours of pre reqs and the reason is that most of the other classes are taken after getting accepted: microbiology, org I, and org II to name a few. Don't know of any other schools but know this one does for all the other SDN ers out there who are saying contrary. This is very unusual so I wouldn't bank on it, but I just thought I would add at least one such school exist.

I KNEW you would have to have Organic 1 atleast, it was just a thought, and besides you can get into some pharmacy schools without even taking the pcat....but act like i'm crazy if u want about that to

As a matter of fact, you are right about not needing the pcat for certain schools. I go to the one that doesn't require it as well.😉 However, these shools are usually some of the hardest to get into because they have a large pool of applicants and most are located in CA. To ccompensate for the lack of PCAT, they usually require alternative measures.

Not trying to be mean, but the idea of substituting Orgo II with another course is somewhat ludicrous.

The PCAT is a standardized exam to test what you learned.

Orgo II is a course to learn new material. The two are not analogous.

Many people at my school took biochem and passed it without orgo 2. The only people that I know that failed are the ones who took it during the summer.
