Hey SDN,
I've been a Biology major at a cc for about a year now and will have completed the following courses by the end of this spring semester:
Biology I, Biology II
Chemistry I, Chemistry II
Anatomy & Physiology
Physics I (calculus based)
As well as Calculus, English I, English II and Psychology.

I will be transferring to a 4-year institute this fall, planning on taking upper level biology courses such as Genetics, Biochem, Microbiology and Cell Biology plus two semesters of physics (algebra based) and Anatomy II to show adcoms I can handle myself at a 4-year institute as well as preparing for the DAT.

I was planning on taking organics this summer to help stay active with my studies, save some money and be ahead with my courses. Taking it in the summer will allow me to just concentrate on organic chemistry, resulting in a higher (cc) grade opposed to taking it with physics, anatomy and (insert upper level biology course) at a four year school.

But on the other hand, adcoms may not appreciate all my chemistries being at a community college, I'll be receiving a university level education of organics compared to a cc level and I'll be taking it later so it will be more fresh in my head when preparing for the DAT.

I'm pretty hung up on this, so any input would be very much appreciated, as always! Thanks!

You're better off taking the second part of anatomy at a community college and taking organic at a university. You've already taken too many prereqs at a CC (almost all of them). I would most certainly take biochemistry, microbiology, and both of your organics and a university. This is just my opinion. A lot of dental schools only allow up to 30 credits of prereqs to be taken at a CC.

I took both Biology I and Biology II in high school for college credit but it was through a community college. I also took both of my physics courses at a CC over a summer. I'm already worried that places will look at it with scrutiny.

Thanks AuburnTiger!
Taking anatomy & physiology II at a cc in the summer then taking organics and upper level biology courses at a university is a great idea. I wish I knew cc wasn't a wise move before I enrolled, guess that's what I get for trying to save money! :smack:
Also, good luck with applying to dental school! I'm sure youll do just fine 👍

Thanks man I appreciate it! And it's not a bad idea to take some prereqs at a CC. Just know that some dental schools don't accept CC credits at all, and some dental schools don't accept CC credits for prereqs. But a lot are flexible and accept a certain amount. I'm still sending my application to places like Temple even though the ADEA Guide says no CC credits for prereqs. We'll see how it goes. I just think that if you're determined to take a CC class in the summer to save on money and get done sooner, you don't need to take two of the courses that are DAT and dental school prereqs. On the other hand, anatomy isn't a prereq for half of the dental schools and isn't required in order to take the DAT. Plus you already took the first part at a CC, so I think it's easy to explain why you took the second part at a CC in the summer. Whereas it's sort of hard to explain why you took two of the harder sciences at a CC in a summer term. Just be careful you do NOT have over 30 credits worth of prereqs at a CC because some places will reject you because of that. If you're planning to retake physics at a university, you only currently have 24 potential credits of prereqs at a CC (Bio 1, Bio 2, Gen Chem 1, Gen Chem 2, A&P 1, A&P 2). I would stop there. Organic 1 and 2 are 10 total credits and that would put you right at 30 (if you didn't take A&P 2). That'd be treading lightly.

Excellent logic!
I'll definitley take your advice on this. Only taking one class will also allow me to shadow more frequently and study for upcoming classes as well as watch Chads Videos to stay fresh in Chemistry. Also, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to apply to Temple. Let me know how it plays out!
Again, thanks for your help and good luck!
