I plan on taking orgo 1 and 2 along with bio 1 and 2 this summer. It will be 14 credits over the span of 2 months. Do you guys think it will be too much to handle?

I wont be taking the orgo labs, but I will be taking the bio labs.

**Edit: I will only be taking orgo 1and 2 with the labs this summer!

keep in mind that organic has lab 3 times a week.(at least in my school)
I think just organic 1&2 would be good enough.

Your GPA will thank you later if you only take 1 course.

Lol. My first summer semester, I took gen chem 2 (lab required with the course) and precalc 1. B's in both (my CC didn't offer +/-). Last summer I took Bio 2 and was forced to take an additional class (American history 2) I didn't need (stupid way the GI bill law is written) - A's in both. It's not bad if you dedicate time to it. This coming summer, I have "completely lost my mind" (as my advisor so eloquently put it), and will be taking both ochem labs, genetics, literature, and a computer science class (the latter 2 should be ver easy and the CS class has no recitation in the summer). It works out to be a 13 credit summer over 2 six week periods. My issue is that I am working against time in that I am trying to finish before my GI Bill runs out on me. This will be after I write the DAT in May.

So, OP, while it is certainly doable, especially if you have no job, spouse or offspring (all of which I have), it won't be easy. Take heart in knowing you're not alone. My advisor said to thinking it as a warmup for dental school.

You aren't crazy now, but you will be by the end of the summer. For now you're just being stupid.

absolutely dumb...... why? just why?

honestly, I think it is do able. I took Physics and two upper division biology courses here at my university. I made all A's in them!

Depending on your professor, Orgo 1 can be a nightmare by itself over the summer. Bio 1 can be structured to be a huge time killer, too, even if all it is is a lot of memorization. I would say, at the most, take those two together.

I took Orgo II, and had a full-time job over one summer, but my Orgo II professor was incredible.

No OP... don't....
Do yourself a favor and take your time making sure you have high GPA when you graduate!

What if i start reading the textbooks a month in advance (and devote my life to school during the summer?) I hear alot of different things about orgo, but im pretty sure bio is just alot of material to memorize.

I took Orgo I ,II Physics II and Calc II over the summer. My math professor said I was crazy and suggested me drop one class but I ended up doing well in all. I see no problems. The only thing is I didn't get to enjoy the summer at all. No beaches no parties no eating out, just days and days in library and classes from 9am to 9pm. If you're motivated and willing to take the challenge, why not? Just study hard. Hang the flag of your dream dental school on your wall. that'll do the trick 😉
As for reading ahead, reading the Bio textbook can be a really good idea, but don't get frustrated when you can't understand certain parts of a chapter. I tried to read Orgo textbook in advance, but it didn't help me much. I didn't really understand the reactions.
Best of luck!

Thanks man. This sounds alot like me. I will probably just be in the library all day everyday.

I would contact each department and get an early copy of the syllabus at least for bio as it can be self studied easily, and since most of it is memorizing if you start early it should all come back to you. this way you can focus more on orgo as this course tends to be gauged by the professor and is harder to self studies since it depends on how in-depth the professor wants to go.

One more thing though. If your school combines Orgo lecture and lab, then I wouldn't recommend taking all 4 courses. Orgo lab is time consuming(sometimes takes ~4hours for one experiment) and the lab reports are really long to write.

I will not be taking the orgo lab but I will be taking the bio labs.

I would advise against it. Sure if you put in the work you'll be fine, but I doubt you will retain much. Plus, enjoy your summers while you can because you won't have those in dental school.

I think this depends on how bio & chem are for you. I know some students that just naturally GET chemistry and have to work a little harder in bio. Then there are students like me, where bio comes naturally to them but they struggle a little more with chem. Definitely recommend taking orgo 1 and 2 over the summer. I did it, but TWO DIFFERENT SUMMERS. Your brain will be tired at the end, but in the end I think it'll be beneficial to have both courses finished in one summer. As for whether or not you should take bio at the same time, that's honestly your judgment call. If chemistry is your thing and you don't think it will interfere with all the reading/studying/memorization for bio then go for it. Or if the reading/studying/memorization of bio comes naturally to you and you'll have time to devote to doing well in orgo, go for that, too. In the end only you can really know if this is a crazy decision or not, especially based on things such as what your school is like, who the professors are, how big the classes are, etc. Good luck!

Dafuq? dude this is crazy. Not only you are taking something as painful as O-chem 1&2 and Bio 1&2 at once, but you are taking them in short semester. Listen, we all like to shine and be unique, but you don't see people wearing a bomb belt to get attention(except for some certain dumb fks). What does bomb belt has to do with you? O-chem and bio will be the bombs in your belt and they gonna kill you along with your chance with DS. I'm not trying to put you down, it's just there is no reason for you to do such thing, unless someone is pointing gun at you and is forcing you to take them all at once.

This is not a constructive response. Combining Orgo 1 & 2 with bio 1 & 2 might be brutal, but I'm really happy with my decision to do orgo 1 & 2 over the summer. I found it easier to keep up with the material since I had it every day, and the classes were smaller for me than they were during the regular semester. Obviously every school and every student is different, but taking all 4 of these classes is NOT a death sentence, and taking at least orgo 1 & 2 is more than doable.
