Hey guys, I'm finishing my sophomore year at the very well known FIU. I'm sure it's the same in all schools, but just in case it's not, this is how it works at my school. We have 3 summer sessions. We have Summers A,B and C. Summer A is 6 weeks long, summer B is also 6 weeks long and starts right after Summer A. Summer C is one, normal sized, 12 week semester that takes place at the same time as A's and B.

I was thinking of taking Orgo I and lab (total of 5 credits) for summer A and Orgo II and lab (total of 5 credits) for summer B. I would be focusing solely on those two classes since they have a reputation of being hard. I would also be severely reducing the amount of hours I'd be at work; possibly only 4 hours on the weekends.

My main question is; am I underestimating Orgo and does this seem manageable to YOU? Thanks!

Is orgo a monster course that cannot be defeated? Of course not
Will that summer sch rule suck? Yes. Yes it will suck quite a bit.

If you are a chem whiz, go ahead, but if not it may be advisable to not rush the ochem sequence and learn the material so you do well. Try to just take one ochem and enjoy your summer a bit. Adcoms won't car when you took your classes but they will care how you did in those said classes.

I took orgo over the summer while doing a summer research program at my hometown university, expecting to get overloaded. While the material is daunting at first, it's by no means unmanageable.
However- and this may be different for your school- my summer classes were five days a week, 3 straight hours of classes, and three labs per week, 4 hours long. It will feel like eternity, and unless you believe you have a good enough work ethic to handle the workload, I would caution against choosing Summer C. Part of me regrets not being able to enjoy my summer with friends.
Just as eteshoe said, if you're comfortable with chemistry and reactions (there are a lot of them), then one semester of orgo is doable. Both semesters is a different story.

Not entirely true as some schools still look down on summer terms. However, doing well is much more important and having 1 or 2 prereqs in the summer wont be an issue

Applicants should avoid taking more than one or two prerequisite science courses during the summer and avoid taking them at community colleges.

I guess I stand corrected
