Hey all! I’ve been fortunate enough to have received 1.5 interview invites so far (one of them was just a phone interview, lol), and I’m currently waiting on decisions from both schools. I’ve been thinking about taking a month-long trip to my parents’ home country to visit extended family....I really miss them. Since it’s a tropical country, I was planning to go during February to early March.

However, I realize this is also a time when interview invites might still be going out or even happening. I’m just wondering if it’s too risky to travel during this window, or if it’s something that could be manageable. Would love to hear any thoughts or advice!

You will get very little time off once you start medical school (definitely not a month), so I say go for it! Personally I wouldn't want to put my life on hold for med school applications (and I haven't). If you get in-person interviews that might be a little tricky, but from my experience the vast majority of schools will have a virtual option, even if it means interviewing in the middle of the night in your case.

Good luck as decisions roll out this week.

Take your trip. Life goes on whether you have interviews or not. More importantly though, if any of your past interviews turn into offers, the spring would be the time when campus visits are scheduled for admitted and some waitlisted candidates. You should figure out if your trip would make those opportunities to visit your potential medical school/s more difficult.
