Hey guys, I'm taking my DAT in a few days (who's counting though?) I'm still consistently scoring the lowest on this section for the BC exams. I've gone through destroyer twice for OC. I pretty much made educated guesses on the first attempt, and maybe marginally a little better on the second attempt. I rewatched Chad's videos. They helped a little, but I'm still not there yet. I have the roadmaps pretty much memorized but I can't really translate those into the things that are asked on the BC exams... I took OC 4 years ago...

I plan on going through destroyer once or twice more, if time allows. Do you guys know which parts of OC I should focus on that would be the highest yield? I know Chad mentions the specific reactions (EAS, aldol, etc), but what else? I'm very lost on what to do at this point. I'm still confused over electron withdrawing and ranking bases vs. acids and it just mixes me up.

Thanks!

OCHEM 😱:arghh::bigtears::dead::boom:

Can't help you pal...just commiserating!!!!!!!!!!

Back to Chad's and Destroyer.....UGGGGGGGG

You might hate me for this, but OC is the best! Haha

I think the best thing to do is go through Destroyer another round, and go over BC exams thoroughly. Clean up your weak spots with Chad's videos and quizzes. Honestly, the OC experience you get from Destroyer/ BC will VERY MUCH prepare you for the DAT!

I'm right there with you man.. at least Chad is interesting to watch, if I had to read about this... it would be game over lol.

What do you mean by thoroughly? Like, more so than just reading the solution, I will try to find that area in my notes and add to it from the BC exam solutions. Should I do more?

Know why you got something right AND wrong. If you miss a question, yes, do go back to your notes!

To help your mental state, a lot of people find the OC part of the real test to be one of the easiest and most basic sections. In fact, it was my highest section and I got a less than amazing grade in ochem 1 in school haha. It's easier than the practice you are doing. That said, make sure you have your basics down. Review what makes something more acidic than something else, review conditions for SN1/SN2/E1/E2, then go memorize some roadmaps. If you learn all that, you'll feel better and be able to look at some more detailed concepts in bootcamp or destroyer

Thanks so much! That makes me feel a lot better. I'm the same way, I did alright in Orgo 1, but when Orgo 2 came along I just got lost, and it sucked lol. But I will definitely take your advice and learn those specific aspects and know them cold. I have some time so I will definitely work on this! 🙂

I did fine in both 1 and 2 and I'm frustrated.

hellofuturedentists---thanks!!!! There is just SO much to know and how do you narrow it down!!

Haha DAT ochem is waaaaay easier than anything you would see on an actual exam from an ochem class. Don't worry! Just learn basic stuff. Basic nomenclature, basic reactions, etc. That will help you figure out the more difficult stuff. I almost fainted after I saw 25 next to OC on my score report. Like, I had to stare at it because I figured there was no way it was real. I'm still not 100% sure haha. Just start with basics and work your way up!

You're welcome! Good luck!

I would learn all the basics, but know in depth for all conceptual questions. This applies for the chemistry section too.

I've been doing some BC practice tests, though QR and RC seems meh. So I'll probably use Math Destroyer and something else for RC.

Other than that, I guess just constantly review Gchem formulas, road maps, destroyer problems, and Ferali's notes.

Weird part is that I think Course Saver quizzes are super easy for ochem and gchem, but when I get to destroyer or BC, I feel like I guess a lot. :/

Yeah the general consensus seems to be that QR and RC are definitely harder on BC than the real DAT. I'm still trying to find a good strategy for RC... But it's tough because I can't seem to do them in the allotted time. Also, some of the passages are so dense that I'm just lost.

I almost might just use math destroyer as well because I feel that's more representative of the test.

I've also been doing the BC tests for science and those are going okay, but yeah OC not so much. I'm almost done with chads videos and will probably take all the quizzes back to back at some point.

I also want to finish up another round of destroyer for all the sciences, but that may not be possible in the few days I have left, plus the practice BC and 2007/2009 ADA practice tests.

Oh man :scared:

I was just going to post that I watched 4 more videos and got 100's on all the quizzes and was feeling better about OChem....yikes!!! I am planning on taking another BC test today and seeing how it goes. So far, at least PAT is going well 😀
