not necessarily mechanisms, you need to know how to get from A to B with what reagents but knowing the mechanism def would help.
 
in organic section, sometimes they ask about intermidate products. if you know mechanism, you will be more comfortable with those kind of questions.
 
Generaly you do not need to know mechanisms. You will never be asked to identify the mechanism of say a claisen or dieckman. However you do need to know the reactions and know what each one is called and what it does.
 
Is there a place that says what areas will be tested(I think there is at least for bio)?
