I don't even understand what question asks for

Which aldehyde gives a hydrate in greatest yield?
a) benzaldehyde
b) Formaldehyde
c) Butanedial
d) ethanal
e) propanal

This is a hydration reaction: aldehyde + water -> hydrate (a diol)

Water readily attacks the least hindered, least substituted aldehyde. This will produce the greatest yield of products. The least substituted compound is b.

Correct. Also the electron withdrawing group makes it easier to hydrate which is why Aldehyde yields more Gem-Diol than Ketones. Hope this helps,

if talking about electron withdrwaing group, shoudln't the benzaldehyde be most electron deficient, because benzne is a strong electrophile?
